We`re very happy to announce the addition of ten historical Lotus race cars to Project CARS thanks to a partnership with Classic Team Lotus :)

To find out which ten cars will be included, check out the frontpage story linked below:

To save Felix the effort: why ten and not twenty? Or: very bad choice of cars! :)

Remco Van Dijk

Superb! Ten instead of five! ;)

The words 'thank you' seem so cheap as a means of saying how happy I am at this news. Thanks guys, you've made me very very happy (I wish I could inject more funds into the project as a real way of saying thanks but I really can't afford to do so at the moment :( ).

Great, nice selection :)
Was wondering yesterday how was the deal with lotus comming up, but didn't want to ask. So will the 3 current Leonus be modified to match one of those Lotus?

What..? Cant I just say a compliment from time to time without having to justify myself? :p

Awesome news guys to finally get the license :D How will this be incorporated into the game will it be via historic racing or a lotus challenge??? How ever they are incorporated i cant wait to drive them ...well done :D

If I absolutely have to nitpick something: Ayrton Senna didnt clinch a championship in a Lotus. The fomulation is a bit misleading. You could have used Fittipaldi for that.

Btw.: has the current Leonus 68 some downforce from its wings modeled to it?
Or has the physics-model underneath always been the one of the Lotus 49 without any wings?

Some downforce; about what you could expect from the 49C. That will have to go and probably shift to slight lift. Fun times ahead. :)

The cars will be featured in Project CARS’ comprehensive career mode, giving players the chance to relive the sensation of being a Team Lotus driver.

BTW, I think a lot of people would die to know what thats supposed to mean. Test Drive: Lotus Racing Legends as part of pCARS career mode? :D

BigMorgan
13-06-2012, 14:38
All right! See ya later, Leonus.

Would love to see an Elise and Esprit in the game too, though. :p

Mihail Serafim
13-06-2012, 14:40
Great news guys. I have never been a fan of open wheel cars before pCARS but now I can say I rather enjoy driving in them and I am really waiting for the Formula Ford, which will hopefully appear in Friday's build and now the 51, which should be a blast to drive.
I am also a big Lotus fan, and I never thought that someone would show love for the Lotus 56, which is an engineering masterpiece, but not one you get to drive around in sims.
Well done.

Athlonic
13-06-2012, 14:41
Well done again SMS !

I love all those cars already, especially the 51 (Formula Ford) it was the car that made me bought on day one the first Toca race driver after driving it in the multiplayer démo some years ago.

Is Team Classic Lotus a different company/license from Lotus? Still wishing for an exige or elise :D

Awesome. Has work begun on any of the other cars yet? Also, will the rebranding of the current Leonuses be pretty quick now they're official?

Yes.

Also, will the rebranding of the current Leonuses be pretty quick now they're official?

Should go quickly as we built them planning for an easy switch when the deal came through. I would imagine we can at least get the 49 and 78 exports without fake wings done for this week's build.

Great catch guys. Now please rip off those silly wings from the 49 right away. :p

Really this is great news. Which makes it even harder for me to wait for those new tyre physics, Casey. Since especially with the old cars that rely on mechanical grip it would be important to have that done correctly.
Though take your time to get it properly sorted before implementation. ;)

I think it should shift to HUGE lift but more importanlty, to much much less drag.

At Spa, the car was fitted with these nose deflectors for practice but it still got to the rev limiter at 196mph on the straights.

I believe that needs another license; the Lotus Cars and Classic Team Lotus aren't the same thing. That said I would love to see some Lotus roadcars like the Elite, Elise and Evora.

Wonder when we will see a track license?

If the Nurburgring gets a full license (GP, 24h, Nordschleife, Sudschleife, etc) then it's an instant account upgrade for me. lol

So this leaves only Audi and Radical as the two brands that need to be licensed?

If I absolutely have to nitpick something: Ayrton Senna didnt clinch a championship in a Lotus. The fomulation is a bit misleading. You could have used Fittipaldi for that. They didn't claim that, they just mentioned that Lotus clinched various wins and championships, and was driven by legendary drivers, like Senna. Senna did clinch wins for Lotus (6). Not misleading in the least.
Why not Lotus Elite, Elan, Cortina and Europe?
They are the classics of my dreams.Looking at the cars it seems that Classic Team Lotus is the license holder for the Lotus racing cars (i.e. purpose built racing cars). Elite, Elan, Cortina and Europe are magnificent cars and I'd dearly love to have them, but they were production cars that were adapted to racing, not built up from the ground up to be racing cars. They most likely have a totally separate license holder.

The classic lotuses are a great addition no question. I will admit though, I kinda expected to maybe see an Elan, Esprit, Carlton etc. I just misunderstood the classic tag on the lotus was a different company.

Great work SMS! Thanks for the monoposto cars.

Hoped for Lotus Eleven from the early sports racing cars, but Lotus 40 is also good in this regard, I guess.

Although I'd like to see some of the other famous Lotus racing cars as Elite, Elan 26R and Cortina ;), which probably aren't object of this licensing deal.

This is great news. Congratulations to the pcars (SMS) team for making this happen.

I will be able to drive a 51 again. I learned to race in a Lotus 51 at Jim Russell Racing School at St. Jovite in the spring/summer of 74. Did the five day scholl in June in the 51's and returned in August for three days of lapping. The 51 was an incredable Formula Ford. A blast to drive. A very straight forward race car. Nothing fancy but very easy to drive and push through its paces. Actually a very forgiving car. I am really looking forward to this.

If we have the Lous 40, can we expect maybe a Ford powered Genie to race against it? Early Can Am or as it was called before Can Am, the United States Road Racing Championship. Perhaps an early Lola or a Chaperral?

Maybe the focus of the SMS staff went on this cars as any kind of basic to be prepared for such a combination.

Ok, story time:

When I was 7 or 8 (which means 1978 or thereabouts, memory might be off by a year or two), I got a scale model of a car for my birthday. Not just any car, either.
It was black and gold, and it had the name John Player Special on the rear wing and the name Ronnie Peterson on the side.
It was quite large (or maybe it was just me being quite small), and it was the coolest thing I've ever seen in my life.
It's what woke my interest in cars, and racing.

So, this is huge.

Thank you.

If anything just see it as official licensing for the Leonus cars, plus some extra cars. We still need official Audi and Radical licenses.
Besides that, Classic Team Lotus (F1 and Indy racing team) is not Lotus Cars Limited (commercial cars).

I actually thought to myself the other day when I read that Lotus is sort of in a limbo right now and the CEO is fired how troublesome it might be currently to acquire any licences. Figures stuff like that get easily lost in situations like these, I hope we can get still some modern Lotus road cars (maybe the new Elan? I read it has been green lit for 2013) and maybe the Cortina and the original Elan nevertheless.

Hugely excited by this news, but also there is a hint of sadness at the current sorry state of affairs around the Lotus Road Car Company in Norfolk. For the love of all things automotive I hope Lotus survives, sadly it may end up as a Chinese company. Thanks Mr Bahar, you truly screwed that up =(.

thanks for the info. I didnīt know that

It reminded me of a story some time ago that a real pilot told me about a student your having difficulties driving a certain car, in case it was a formula, and this student said the car was crap, and this same pilot told him that there are no bad cars, but drivers disinterested, I thought it was brilliant and I never forget what he told me until today.
Only seven months after it student pilot won a Formula Renault championship and today enjoys more formulas than any other car he had the opportunity to experience.

Now that we can have the real Lotus 49, we should use the updated gearbox I modelled for it. It's smoother, more accurate and more detailed than the Leonus one.

Thinking about all the licenses of special cars/ manufacturers, pCARS can achieve and has a lready achieved, even a smaller car park than Forza or GT5 could be more interesting than the huge amount of unusable cars in GT and Forza nobody would really race with.

Doesnīt matter.
But still I thin formula cars are built only for racing.
GT cars for example are also something I can establish a passion for design. Imho formulas are heartless tubes with a motor and 4 tyres. They donīt even have a face. And the sound is unnerving.
All we got on TV is formula! Although, I live partly in a country that has the VLN & 24H Race at Nurburgring AND the ADAC Rally Championship all you can get on TV is formula!
Did I mentioned that I hate formula racing? :)
I know, Schumacher and Vettel f.e. have nothing to do with the Lotus era, but formula Cars basicly are a symbol to me. A symbol of greed and everything that desroys racing for me.

That is not really an argument. Shall I tell you what cars I would like to see but that would never appear in pCARS (I think thatīs fact)? But this point isnīt a circumstance not to like other announcements (since there a re a lot more coming). As much as I am excited to see new cars and official license coming to pCARS, I must admit I'm a little disppointed by the choice of so many classic F1 car ... I hoped more sports cars would make it.
Having the 25 (first lotus F1 car i suppose), 49 (existant 49C could have been un-winged), 72 (better fit than 49C as a winged vehicle IMO), 78 and 98T was more than enough (for me), and different enough between each one.
Too bad the wishes of the team, the 11 and 23B, couldn't be obtain, as well as my favorites 30 and 62.

Moving on, I now look for new announcements for other brands, hopping to see some GT3/2/1 cars.

Hooray! A nitpicky bickering fight and I m not involved for once! :D

Oh uh on topic... shame it wasnt possible to licence the 11 cause of some shenanigans. Beautiful car that. The 40 is even more gorgeous, though. Might be the best looking Lotus of all time, imho. I m still a little curious on what the bigger picture will look like. Like some other people said, we now have some great licences but rarely cars that are good matches or in the same class. The last two huge deals are a good example, 20 cars in 20 classes. Thats almost 33% of the car count that was voted for. And 15 of those arent even useful for the career mode. I just hope SMS keeps the bigger picture in mind, the game could lose enormously if the racing series would turn into cup challenges. We need rivals for our Fords and Lotii! :)

We donīt know if SMS is going for the result of this poll. I think their first intention is to make the deals they are looking for/ were already in the pipeline and what the budget permits. If the result is that we have some more than the 50 cars the community has voted, probably nobody will complain.

FLX81
14-06-2012, 09:46
@ Ron: I know, Ian already said that car count will exceed the 50-75 that were voted for. But even if they make it 100, thats still a fifth of overall car count! And if you take in consideration that all of those at least need 2 competitor cars at minimum for some believable racing, thats 60% of car count! And from those 60, only 5 of the Fords have a real use for the career mode... You see what I mean?

Not saying SMS will not pull it off in the end and tie it all together, still have to say the aforementioned bigger picture is still a bit hard to see at this point. :)

Andy Garton

I guess this is the key point, and I don't really agree with it. If anything I actually prefer single make racing personally as it's then all about the driver. I realise I'm probably in a minority but nevertheless I still think we can make a great game with the car mix we currently have.

Having said that, plenty more licensing news to come.

FLX81
14-06-2012, 10:25
Andy, dont misunderstand me, I m a huge fan of single make racing myself and I dont doubt for a second that single make races with those 20 cars would be huge fun. Thing is though (and thats the real key point imho): Those cars were not racing in single make series in real life, so if pCARS aims to be a simulator portraying their lives as racing cars in the best way possible, they need their rivals that they were racing against in real life. Example: What would the GT40 have been without Ferrari to beat? ;)

Personally, my favorite racing series therefor are those who are as tight and competitive as single make series, but have those company rivalries nevertheless: Thats why I love touring cars and GTs most of all.

I love the single class racing. I think what it needs to feel unique is team liveries. I think in an intense race being wedged between two 'John Player Specials' is just as (ok, almost) competitive as being between two different manufacturers.

AI characteristics to match enhance it even further.

And we already have heaps of awesome liveries :)

That in and of itself is not entirely true. Bigger teams with bigger budgets will always find an advantage (setup etc). It's just they are starting from tr same point as everyOne else (see indycar - Penske, ganassi and Andretti rule despite spec chassis, and until this year spec engine).

Multicar-class races have always been the heard and soul of motorsport. That's where all the drama is, and where people made history! All the great, epic races that people remember today were driven with many different cars.
People talk about the Formula 1 of the 60's and the 70's today. They talk about the LeMans races out of the Ford GT 40 era. They talk about the great years of porsche in LeMans.
Have you ever heard someone talking about a one-make series race of the past? That never happens.

The rFactor Historic GT&TC races (call it GTL reloaded, if you like) are fantastic.
The cars are all completely different, and yes, there are cars in which your chances of a win are a lot better than in others, but you know what? No one cares. You just know that a Lotus Cortina is slightly faster than an Alfa GTA.
You just know that a Ford Mustang is faster than both of them in a sprint race. But man, what a feeling when you beat one of them anyway.

I even enjoyed driving the Mini in these races. Yes, you'll probably lose against everything that isn't a Mini or a fiat abarth, but you are the underdog, you feel like the underdog, and everyone knows that your car is bloody slow, but that's what makes it great! People have a smile on their face when they lap you, thinking "look, the little mini again" and you are behind the wheel, knowing that you get everything out of this little car, and that you're on the edge of what's possible, just to beat this one, bloody Jaguar Mk II that an other idiot chose to drive.

I prefer this by miles over any single-car class race, where everyone got the same material, the same chassis, the same engine, the same everything. It's these multicar-class races where people look back on, after some years. When they meet up in the teamspeak one day and say: you remember? When you took the Mini and I was in the Jag...

It's more fun than just having one of them on the track, at least in endurance racing. But it's still not the same as having different classes with multiple cars in every class like in the Historic races.
Cortina, Alfa GTA and Mustang for example aren't the same, but they are still in the same class. The Cortina is something like 5-10 seconds faster around the VLN-Nordschleife than the Alfa. That's 5-10 seconds on an 11 minutes lap.
