Slightly Mad Studios Welcomes Nicolas Hamilton

As per the front-page news story (http://www.wmdportal.com/projectnews/slightly-mad-studios-welcomes-nicolas-hamilton/), Slightly Mad Studios is delighted to announce the newest contributor to Project CARS as real-life racing driver Nicolas Hamilton has joined the studio as Handling Consultant for the new title. Nicolas is an excellent fit for Project CARS as his experience combines vast knowledge from racing in the real world and roots in simulation racing, allowing him to understand both sides and effectively help Project CARS fulfil its potential.

Born in Herfordshire, England, in 1992, Nicolas was brought up in the motorsports world alongside older brother Lewis. Born with Cerebral Palsy, Nicolas has always made sure this wouldn’t stop him from pursing his passion for racing. After a first try of karting at the age of 7, Nicolas’ racing career kicked into higher gear in 2010 when he impressed everyone testing a BMW M3 at Palmer Sport. His smooth driving style earned him his MSA Novice Racing License and secured him a seat in the Air Asia Renault Clio Cup where he has been competing ever since. Nicolas has started his second Clio Cup season this year, driving for T.C.R. You can check out a video of Nicolas in action here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kb-t_eO4t7s).

Aside from making it in the real racing world, Nicolas has also made a name for himself in simulation racing, finishing first in the 2009 SBTCC Championship and racing successful in plenty of other community-organized sim racing events.

Nicolas will be assisting the development team with making the handling in Project CARS as authentic as possible, as well as providing other general feedback. Furthermore, he’ll join tens of thousands of members in the WMD forums, sharing his view of all the latest developments in a weekly blog for all members to enjoy.

Please join me in welcoming Nic to the team! :)

I have seen the Clio Cup at Assen years back myself. Interesting little things. Almost as agile as go karts I think, especially when taking the extra weight of the Clio into consideration.

Hey guys, Thank you all for your kind comments and for giving me such a warm welcome. I am so happy to be apart of such a great project, sim racing is what started off my 'Real-life' racing career and so I am very dedicated in giving my feedback to make this game as good as it possibly can.

In reply to a couple of people who were joing around about the 'Stats' saying I use a gamepad, I use a Thrustmaster T500 RS with the F1 Wheel, for some reason my PC does not realise that it is a Wheel and not a gamepad. As I am disabled, I do not use Pedals, I just use the buttons on the wheel to accelerate and brake, and so because of this, I have ABS on :). I have been trying the latest build out and so far I am loving it.

Im happy to help with setups or anything you guys need, I have set quite a good lap in the BMW Z4 GT3 car around Spa and have found a good setup.

Once again, thanks a lot for welcoming me.

I think the gain of acc/brake precision doesnt equate with the loss of steering precision u have with a wheel

Some wheels have analog shift pedals which can be used for throttle and brake. Shifting can be done by buttons.

And yeah, it's a shame they don't currently produce wheels like the old Thrustmaster GP1 or Formula Sprint, which had analogue paddles that could be used for gas and brakes, and worked wonders in that capacity (Formula Sprint also had pedals on top of that, so you could go either way). Lacked FFB though, very old gear. Seeing how modern F1 cars have paddle clutches I'd hope wheels like that would make a comeback, would be great for certain things (like the aforementioned clutch, and also a better makeshift handbrake), and would probably offer better controls than plain buttons.

Good to have another professional driver on board!

@Nicolas: Is this your first "Consultant-job" for a gaming studio?
Do you had contact with the big professinal racing simulators of the racing teams? How "far" is pCars away from this?

Thanks for your time!!

Welcome Nic, hope you have fun. I'm sure the rest of us will with the feedback we're gonna be getting. (:

Nic, maybe you can put your awesome game system specs and what you use to drive in your sig like we all have. We all have it so the devs know what we use so they can more easily find solutions to our issues.

Just go to Control Panel in the top right, then signature on the left. ;)

ps. Would love seeing you set a time with the Lotus 98T on the Belgium Kart track. It's pretty challenging but nice combo. You should try it. :)

Welcome Mr Hamilton, great to have someone like yourself on board.

Haha, smooth. I think he'll whoop us all quite easily. :p

Hi Nicolas and welcome aboard!

I hope you don't mind if I ask you a few questions about your disability? :)

From your comments, it appears that you do not have full use/control of your legs or more specifically, that you have fine motor control issues with your legs/ankles/feet? Is that correct? I do seem to remember seeing you on TV walking around the F1 paddock, though, so you must have at least some use of your legs? And by the way, you're a natural on TV, mate!

Here's hoping that some of the other simracing gearheads on here can help cook up a cool analogue control setup for brakes and throttle that you (and others who have a similar disability) can use in simracing.

Have fun racing and great to have you here! :a31::a04:

EDIT: Ah, just watched the "Racing with the Hamiltons -- Nic in the driving seat" video and that answered all the questions that I had.

Great news!! Interesting profile as sim racer and real racer.
Welcome Nic.

As other users I´m curious about accelerating and braking with buttons.
I once tried to drive without pedals, and found it was easier to accelerate / brake with the shifters (even if they are crappy as the ones in the Driving Force Pro).
And using the buttons in the wheel for gear shifting. Strangely I found it easier to have things crossed. I mean: if you accelerate with the paddle on your right hand, you shift up with the closest button to your left thumb and vice versa.
Seeing Thrustmaster F1 wheel, I wonder which buttons do you use. Top red and green ones? are they progressive? or maybe the two mini joysticks at the bottom?
And one last question if you don´t mind, how is your racing Clio adapted?

Really interested on your views of the Project so far and looking forward to your input. For such a young man you seem to have a huge amount of motor sport expierence alloyed with a background and love of racing sims which will be really valuable to this Project.
As you can see by the amount of welcome posts your going to be a very popular addition to both SMS and it's Community.
Hope you can handle the barrage of questions coming your way the next couple of months.

And one last question if you don´t mind, how is your racing Clio adapted?

Hi mate,

Ok so I have only ever used buttons for sim racing, and over time I have developed a technique for accelerating and braking. I have never used paddles for progressive acceleration etc, and I probably would not get on with it. I cannot be progressive with the buttons, the only way it works is by carrying as much speed into the apex of the corner as possible. Sometimes I find myself using a higher gear for a corner than people that use pedals, due to the fact that, if I went down one more gear, my buttons will stop the car too much which makes me lose time.

Single seater cars are very tough because of the downforce and the fact that progressive throttle is what makes you quick in a single seater, but with a touring car or anything that is closed-wheel, it is all down to the technique with the buttons, traction, braking late etc.

If you look at the Thrustmaster F1 Wheel, I use the DRS (yellow) button to accelerate and the K (green) button to brake.

I use pedals in the clio, I just have adapted Pedals and a hand clutch on the steering wheel :)

Hope this helps

I see this maybe a little critical. Well, he's racing and certainly has experience in this area. But he drives the Clio cup. What about the physics of driving the open Weeler? What about the high-powered cars?
Nicolas has failed 6 times in 14 races. Number 23 in the overall standings.
I would not condemn it absolutely, but only stimulate a discussion.

At the end of the day it's all about experience behind the wheel and that's where Nic excels - he has been unlucky in some races but knowing how a tyre performs at the limit is very important.

Don´t see that like you. He drives real (race)cars so his input is really important. And next thing is: He drive not only Clio´s, i think he drive other Cars too. Maybe he drove a Pagani Zonda R (don´t know ;)) or other cars we´d have hear.

"Think" "Maybe" ....
Maybe some more information would be needed to assess the whole bit better.
I'm not crying "super", just because the name is Hamilton. Would he call Charles Brown, then the others would see maybe a little more skeptical.

He has infinitely more feeling for how race cars (and karts!) behave than the average sim racer, no matter how many cars he has actually driven or is driving. That counts for me.

As opposed to your wealth of experience in what exactly?

I really can't believe a real life competitor and experienced sim racer decides to dedicate a heap of time to help us make a better game and some people still want to shoot it down as 'not good enough' for their lofty ideals.

Morgan Henstridge
13-11-2012, 11:31
Welcome aboard Nic :)

For mine, it doesn't matter what he has raced, and forget the surname for a second.

It's the fact he has raced and pushed tyres etc to the limit on actual race circuits, and he likes Sims.

If he can help translate the feeling of eg tyres on the limit better to the developers comparing the real car and tyre behaviour to the sim, then its a plus from where i'm standing.

Welcome aboard Nicolas.
I think karts, clio and bmws are just a part of the cars he has driven. Those are the pro experiences, but he has driven other sport or racing cars for sure, at least for fun.
That said, even with only the 3 veichles mentioned, his experience as a sim and real driver is way more big compared to the less or zero experience of many of us, that's clear and I don't think there is the need to explain why.
Just think of him racing with the clio and then going back to the box to talk to the mechanics about handling and set-ups and the way to adjust the behaviour of the car. All this experience can be useful to us, because he knows how a sport car behave in the track, what could be wrong in the set-up, which settings modify and how, at least because they have explained that to him during this years.

Not to say his experience with paddock girls. That can be useful too! :D
Since this is a sim we have to simulate every aspect of the real experience.
Who's the man in charge for the development of the paddok girls? Aren't they able to give the driver their telephone number yet?

Nua Sidek
13-11-2012, 11:38
lets not forget they both enjoy racing (sims) against each other. It's not just about having a recognised real world racer, it's more about having the said racer wanting to bring about the best in the sim he's associated with. I don't want some racer coming in and just say 'yeah, thats good etc... kthnxbai'

As opposed to your wealth of experience in what exactly?

I really can't believe a real life competitor and experienced sim racer decides to dedicate a heap of time to help us make a better game and some people still want to shoot it down as 'not good enough' for their lofty ideals.
Well at least Nicolas has been introduced quickly to how things go about on an internet forum, hopefully he's been trained in shoulder-shrugging :)

Btw, I've read on main page we have Ben Collins support. Does he actually do anything for us?
Theres a thread in the "physics and ai" section of the forum with bens feedback but I think it was all based on the old tyre model before SETA.

He should be active again this month

If I remember correctly from the video about Nicolas, he met one of his best friends via the RD forums. So he should be trained. :)

I'm really getting fed up with all this "intellectual masturbation" ... Just leave people alone doing what they like !
What's the point of doing this???!
Disgusted.

By the way, the most important thing : WELCOME Nicolas, I hope you'll enjoy the trip with us :)

Now Nic is here it makes me wonder what Lewis will do in the off season. Would be nice to see the brothers fight for fastest lap on the leaderboards. ;)

My guess is that Lewis is going to be spending a massive amount of time testing with Mercedes.. and wondering what he got himself into. :)
